Proyecto Barril - Barrel Proyect

by iwok88
December 4, 2010, 9:45 am

Well, before talking to you about the project which I began for this competition, let me tell you something about myself and how I came to this point.

One day, when I was surfing in the internet, I saw pictures from personally modified computers. This was the start-point of my interest, and the first changes I made on a computer.

My first modd: I added a side-vent of 120 mm to my then actual computer, creating a window and an engraving. Here are some pictures.

Here the original window, and what I made out of it.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/comparacion.jpg

This picture shows how it looked like afterwards, obviously the hardware changed a little bit.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/P1060232.jpg

The next modding I made, was for a friend. It was a common cabinet, on which I just changed the look. I put some pictures from this modding for you here.

This was the cabinet, before we put hands on it.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/Fotocompu2.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/Fotocompu1.jpg

And this is the way it looked like when it was finished.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/tapaterminada3.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/venti.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/vistafinal2.jpg

So, you can notice that I do not have much experience referring to modding. But I try to learn from the best. And I try to practice what I see and what I learn.

This is the reason why I took heart to realize this project from the very beginning, something I never did before.

I will give you a brief description about how I began this Project.

I was  quite a time away from modding. Finishing university and beginning to work, I had not much time, and so I forgot about modding. But one day, I found a WEB-page of modding in my country, and I registered. As I was reading a little bit about it, I had the wish to participate, not only as a reader, but as an active modder. And I always had the wish to make a modd from the very beginning on. But I had no idea neither about the theme or the form. So, one day I was reading a post from PaPang about how to begin a modd. In this post he said, that first you have to have an idea about what will be the theme of your modd, if it would be a movie, a game, a comic, animal, sport-team, or anything else. So, this was the first step: what would be the topic of my modd.

So, I was looking around, thinking about , then I checked the web if somebody had not made something about what I had in mind, looking what they had not done, …. And one day, walking around in the working room, which is also a storing room for forgooten things and things we do not use any more, I finally found the theme of my modd.

And this is a barrel, bought by my father many years ago. This barrel has been stored for much time, I remember it since I was a child. We used it as a seat, or as a bench and put things on it. But by the time and as decoration of the house changed, it finally went to the storing room.

Now it had a new destination,  so the project is to make a computer cabinet out of a barrel.

So le tus begin with the woklog and see how it goes.

Here I show you a picture after having rescued the barrel from where it was.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060288.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060289.jpg

The first step is to take the barrel to pieces. I must see how it is inside and how much work it will need.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060311.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060313.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060312.jpg

Once I took the barrel into pieces, I realized that the pieces were not smoothed with sandpaper and that they had lots of defective parts. So I had to smoothen all the parts of the barrel. The barrel is conformed by two tops, 16 planks and 4 rings which hold all together.

This is how the planks look like.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060314.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060316.jpg

For now, smoothen them  with sandpaper one by one.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060318.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060317.jpg

Now smoothen the tops of the barrel.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060315.jpg

And then put the pieces together, which is a real challenge

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060319.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060320.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060322.jpg

As you can see, I made a small basement which I invented, but the idea is that it finally looks similar to this picture which I found in the web.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/barril_castellano.gif

The next step after having smoothened the interior of the barrel is: How to fix the motherboard to the interior of the barrel the way it would not be a problem to take it off again.

So I was thinking and thinking. Finally I thought it would be better to leave the part of the motherboard universal, That means that it should not be especially for the motherboard I want to put in this special moment.  So I took one of the tops of the barrel, in this case the back one, and cut a rectangle. Then I put a track in the interior part of the plank. This way I can put and take off the Back Panel I/O, just slighting the panel and changing it for another one.

Here are the images.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060321.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060323.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060648.jpg

Now, the next step is to make a basement for the motherboard, I did it using some parts of an old cabinet I had forgotten somewhere

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060329.jpg

What I did was taking the part where the motherboard has its place, marc it and cut it the way I needed it.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060327.jpg

For this step I used a DREMEL and a cutting disc. And, of course, a safety mask.

Do not try to do this at home, hahaha.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060326.jpg

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/iwok88/fotos/worklog%20barril/P1060325.jpg

Well, here are the first presentations of how it could look like.

Mexican Mods go the USA.

by Papang
July 27, 2010, 7:11 am

http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww119/papangcun/-itx%20project/overclocking-overclock.jpg

Just to let the bros here know that the Overclock.net Yearly Case Mod Contest 2010 is coming to a close. OCN is the largest forum of this type in the USA and one of the largest in the world and at the beginning of the year 5 Mexican modders decided to participate after a lot of convincing and PMs. As you know, we are way behind the Philippines mod-wise but decided to take a step forward in improving our level and you all know that there is no better way than competing in a mod contest to bring out the best in us.  We were a little overwhelmed by the size and the speed that post come and go, but 3 of us managed to finish more or less in good shape (mine was probably the most cut-back of the three due to some personal problems).  We were:

-Ne(v)esis with "Orb Fortress":

-Iwok88 with "Barrel" (what a name!):

-Papang with  "Up and Away":

I am putting the links to OCN if you wish to see the worklogs which were posted in English.  The ordeal began Dec. 17, 2009 and ended July 4,2010--a full 6 months and the threads were private all the time, something we did not like too much. Also the voting process took 3 weeks which is another exhausting time period and ended just yesterday night.

I am glad to report that we finished like this:

Well the results of the public polls are as follows:

    * Professional
          o First: -- Warfarin88 - Blue moon
          o Second: -- shinji2k - whiteout
          o Third: -- ne(V)esis - Orb Fortress
    * Intermediate
          o First: -- iwok88 - Barrel Proyect
          o Second: -- Chewman - Project µ.R.G.E
o Third: -- Papang - Up and Away
    * Amateur
o First: -- otterpopjunkie - Theatre Cassette Deck
          o Second: -- Sparhawk - Silence
          o Third: -- frigginacky - Graphite

As you might know, I managed to get out "Phosphor" within this period of time which competed in the NMC First Anniversary Contest (got 1st!) but to manage a third in Intermediates, well what can I say?  What I am glad to report is that iwok88, a relative noob to modding, being more into carpentry, managed a first place by a landslide which shows how important it is to choose the right theme.  It guess it shows that you get a lot of mileage out of drinking and alcoholic beverages, haha!

The two dropouts we had were one in Professional and one in Amateur. So I guess we came out better than expected in general and of course this kicked up the level several notches for the rest in our small and relatively new forum.

Next up, the New Mod City Case Mod Showdown II 2010 and maybe the Techpowerup Soccer Mod Contest 2010.  Hopping to see more of you guys in these contest. A special hello to sunny and rowdy/Cham_e.

Cheers and Saludos

Phosphor 2010 Mexico

March 26, 2010, 4:37 am

Just dropping by to wish everyone a belated Happy New 2010 and drop off my worklog of the latest project I have been working on.

Background)  After a modding hiatus (some do get fed up modding after a while, specially under contest pressure), I dropped by a computer tech friend of mine who was sort of experiencing a post seasonal depression the first week of Feb/10. Anyways, he was doing an early spring cleaning and was dumping a bunch of old customer cases and assorted junk in the trash bin.  I of course gave him a hand and when I saw this little case, I just felt that I had to ask him for it.  I killed 2 birds with this stone: got prime material to make a modding tutorial for my fledgling forum and a perfect excuse to enter the New Mod City 1st Anniversary Tourney.  I have been working on this for a while so I will upload as fast as I can to get it up to speed so don't be phased  with the dates. All was done from the 2nd week of Feb/10 to date so it is not ancient history, hehe. I am still working on it and the due date is 16/Apr/10.

I want to say hello to my bros. Sunnyxtremist and Cham_E_Lyon and my fellow forum mates from NMC Acid_Eyez and gabriel_d7 and wish them all well and the best of fortune for this year and the future. I want to give credit to Sunny and Cham_e for getting me going into acrylics, fancy mods and a better sense of modding. My mods now are WAY different from when I met them and I will always look up to them as Senseis and Master modders and mis amigos.

Back to the case,

My tech friend told me that the owner had gotten fed up with changing the psu which is of the mico-Atx variety and that are really hard to find here in Mexico vs Atxs which you can get anywhere.  The hardware was junk by now (Athlon XP) so that too went out. So, as someone said "one guys junk is another guy's treasure". I toted it back home and this is it, after a little cleaning:

http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww119/papangcun/-itx%20project/Thin%20case/DSCI0018.jpg

http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww119/papangcun/-itx%20project/Thin%20case/DSCI0019.jpg

http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww119/papangcun/-itx%20project/Thin%20case/DSCI0023.jpg

I placed my recently arrived mini-Itx mobo inside to see what it llooked like and this was it, either the mini-Itx is really small or the case if really big!  The mobo is a Zotac 9300i-e which is a socket 775 and takes DDR2 ram, but the distinguishing factor is that it also includes a pc-express 2.0, 16 bit slot for an external video card. It has all else buit-in: wi-fi, 7.1 sound, lan, etc.

http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww119/papangcun/-itx%20project/Thin%20case/DSCI0025.jpg

Of course it was all scratched and dented (the previous owner would hit it with a broomstick when it would lock up, probably from excess heat). It will however be the prime-material for a hot mod, hehe!

Saludos and Cheers

Patti... the ghetto case build

by gabriel_d7
February 5, 2010, 6:11 am

I was recently approached by a friend of mine, asking me to make a "specs list", since she just got herself a budget for a school/gaming rig. So browsing TPC, I was able to make a list of components that would be great for school, and good enough for gaming(I had the games that she liked playing [Rainbow 6, HAWX, DiRT, and Prototype] in mind while making the list).

Everything costs 18k, and though she only has a 17k budget, adding 1k wouldnt be difficult... but well over her limit. The specs list I made didnt include a monitor, a dvd drive, and a casing. And after reading my worklog on Blackie, she then thought that it would be fun to just construct a case from something that can be found in her room. And that's how "Patti"(the name she chose for this particular build), came into existence.

First off, the goodies we just recently bought...

http://www.pcmodz.info/img/gallery/personal/777_dsc00929.jpg
The mobo... she didnt want anything fancy. And we needed an AM3 mobo that would support.......

http://www.pcmodz.info/img/gallery/personal/777_dsc00930.jpg
... DDR3 Rams. And I was able to find this 4gb set for only 5k. Yeahba!

http://www.pcmodz.info/img/gallery/personal/777_dsc00935.jpg
I was able to find this used Triplex ATI Radeon HD4670 for only 2k.

long time no post :D

anyway. while browsing the net these past few weeks. i came across a review of asus latest motherboard offering for the P55 platform. the asus SABERTOOTH, i was so impressed with the overall look and color theme of this motherboard and decided to use it as the theme for my next casemod project.

http://images.google.com.ph/url?source=imgres&ct=img&q=http://news.softpedia.com/images/news2/ASUS-Officially-Debuts-the-SABERTOOTH-55i-Motherboard-2.jpg&usg=AFQjCNEN5-QKZZQ9nTunLWd5SK7d0OavQw

the case i'll be using for this project is an antec 900 case. the case will be painted and accentuated using camo colors and styles based on the asus Sabertooth.

some pics of the case.

Project: Project: Satella DQ-v2 (extended mod version)

by sunny

Project: Satella DQ -v2 (plus additional mod version not included on that submission)

Satella Sketchup

At first,  I really didn't have a pre made sketchup or plan of anything with what to do with this bucket. I was thinking of lots of things and finalised to do something in near form of a satellite. I surf the net for photos of satellites that will eventually be my guide in making a satellite (somewhat in mixed form of all the photos I printed for a satellite figures.) This was a free form of modding, adding up ideas as it comes into my mind... I was also thinking of some lighting effects (just reminded me that in outer space lightings are essential).

So let me introduced you to the bucket - or the future attack/defence satellite - The Satella.

http://inlinethumb20.webshots.com/42387/2599358190053927514S600x600Q85.jpg
The bucket in its original state, used for gardening, lots of limestone from mother earth.

http://inlinethumb55.webshots.com/45942/2175924230053927514S600x600Q85.jpg
During the start of mod, I prepared the printed photos of some common satellites that orbits around earth, I could not find something as round as this bucket so I just make it on my mind. Took out some of my spare LEDs for lightings to include the acrylic and gluestick bars that I will be using for utility lightings.

Satella Bucket Cleanup

In my mod, I hate to use most of the time the one that runs on electricity such as this one... I am forced to do so since there are lots of deformities and acquired mineral sticking on this bucket.

http://inlinethumb27.webshots.com/45530/2774722650053927514S600x600Q85.jpg
Cleaning the wornout edges of the bucket, a quick one.

http://inlinethumb13.webshots.com/44300/2675408100053927514S600x600Q85.jpg
Now for the more exhausting part!!!

http://inlinethumb52.webshots.com/42163/2909882070053927514S600x600Q85.jpg
http://inlinethumb33.webshots.com/2592/2782599770053927514S600x600Q85.jpg
A used blade come in handy, helped me a lot with the edges and scrapping limestone.

http://inlinethumb63.webshots.com/41982/2510014780053927514S600x600Q85.jpg
Some sandpapers help with the finishing...

http://inlinethumb39.webshots.com/45542/2982982530053927514S600x600Q85.jpg
a little more minutes, it'll be over!!!

Satella Front Panel

I will be using my original Airforce Turbine Fan Mod for this mod.

Just finished installing the water cooling system but still looks dull to me so i am going for a red, black and a lot of chrome features.
Things to try in this set up:
1. Experiment with DIY chrome paints for alot of the plastic parts.
2. Some Red to enhance the red coolant that runs through the tubings.
3. Dual GTX 260 SLI graphic cards and modiffying and painting the water blocks to chrome or red without compromising the thermal conductivity.
4. More chrome sleeving for the cables and wires.

Current setup
Intel Quad core Q9650 3.0 ghz
ASUS striker II NSE motherboard
OCZ 2x 2gig DDR3 pc3-10666 memory
160 gig solid state drive for system files and 500 gig raptor HDDS on raid set up
Swiftech triple fan MCR320-QP Radiator
Swiftech MCP655-B pump
1/2 clear tubings
Apogee GTZ cpu water block 775
HAF 932 Cooler master Full tower case
1100w PSU
HP dual layer DVD burner with lightscribe

Things to add:
GTX 260 dual fan radiator with dual fan (just for cpu cooling and use the triple fan case for the chipset and VGA cooling only)
Change the memory sticks to dominators
Memory fans or try to experiment with memory water cooling.
Fan controllers and Card Readers on the drive bays

Current budget - Wife doesnt know. lol

Hi, I'm new to modding. But I've been fascinated by it for a long time. Not a lot of female modders out there that I can talk to(yes, I'm a girl... just in case you're thinking otherwise), so I usually talk to one of the closest people whom I hold dear... gabriel_d7 :D

And I decided to do a mod of my own. But then, I'm not the one who will ACTUALLY do it... more like, I'll have some people work on certain aspects of the case... but it IS definitely my design.

Though I'm an arts and crafts person... metal workings is something I dont plan to delve into... yet. I have a day job... so I cant be as dedicated to modding as most modders usually are.

Enough details about me... here are some pics that will give you an idea of what I plan to do..

Existing Specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4ghz
Fsb/8mb shared
Asus Pro P45 Xfire / gbe / 1394
Kingston 6400/800 2 gb ddr2 ram (cl5) x2
Seagate 500gb 3.5" sata 32mb
Asus EAH4850 512mb ddr3
Samsung 22x Sata dvd writer
Cooler Master CM590 Black ATX casing with 2 120cm fan
Aerocool Horsepower 750w psu with 140cm led fan

This will be my other entry for the NMC Case Modding Showdown 2009 in the Modding Masters Category.

I start this project on sunday August 30, 2009

I decided to change the way I post most of my Project and create a Work-Video Log.

The Plan of this project started in the NMC Forum so if it's ok I can post the linkback to the thread if not just let me know!

CypriUm the Ultimate Water Cooling Loop Case

In Greek the metal was known by the name chalkos (χαλκός). Copper was a very important resource for the Romans, Greeks and other ancient peoples. In Roman times, it became known as aes Cyprium (aes being the generic Latin term for copper alloys such as bronze and other metals, and Cyprium because so much of it was mined in Cyprus). From this, the phrase was simplified to cuprum, hence the English copper. Copper was associated with the goddess Aphrodite/Venus in mythology and alchemy, owing to its lustrous beauty, its ancient use in producing mirrors, and its association with Cyprus, which was sacred to the goddess. In astrology, alchemy the seven heavenly bodies known to the ancients were associated with seven metals also known in antiquity, and Venus was assigned to copper.

The Plan (December 01, 2008)

Build the ultimate and most innovative Water Cooling system ever seen.
Over time I have seen all the components of a computer change periodically, since the introduction of the water cooling system has been poorly updated. So I decided to create my own Water Cooling System "CypriUm - The Ultimate Water Loop Case".

I'll use the same measures as a Full ATX Case and I'll follow the Water Cooling traditional parameters, using 1/2" copper pipes, radiator, reservoir, water blocks (CPU and GPU) and hoses, the difference will be the integration of these components with the design of the case.

Things that I want to accomplish:
- Custom Made Reservoir (Not like the Original Plan but better)
- Custom Water Loop (Done)
- Less Tubing – More AirFlow (Done)
- Less Cable (Done)
- Unique Shape (Done)

Sub-Mods
#1 PSU - Mod (Done)
#2 Graphic Card Mod (Done)
#3 SATA Sleeving (Done)
#4 120mm Case Fan Mod (Done)
#5 Custom Power Button (Done)

Cu = Copper = CypriUm

The Materials

- 1/2" Copper Pipe (
- 1/2" Copper Ts (
- 1/2" 45° Copper Elbow (
- 1/2" 90° Copper Elbow (
- 1/2" Acrylyc Tube (3)
- 1/2" Fittings (6)
- Double 120mm Radiator (1)
- Pump (1)
- CPU and GPU Water Block
- 6' of Hose
- Acrylic Sheet 30"x28 (2)
- Pipe Cutter
- Bernzomatic Propane
- Bernzomatic Welding Rods
- Clear Epoxy
- Fiberglass Resin and Hardener
- 140mm Case Fan (1)
- 120mm Case Fan (3)
- Bright Orange LEDs (16)
- Hex Mesh (2)
- Pennies (2)

"Red, White, and Blackie..."

Current specs:
-Intel E7200 Core2Duo 2.53ghz, Coke shot to 3 ghz
-Asus P5KPL-C
-4gb OCZ Reaper 1066mhz ram
-160 Seagate 7200rpm HDD
-640 Western Digital Caviar HDD
-1TB Western Digital Caviar HDD
-Inno3d GeForce GTX260 Core 216
-Hec 500watts psu
-Orion 500watts generic psu

A really good friend of mine, who's a fan of Pan de Siosa Peanut, made me realize that it's possible to do 2 mods at the same time. And since my current computer has been around for a year, I just thought that it needs a makeover.

Since my current mod project, aptly named "Violet Reaction", will cause me to do a makeover on my room(aside from the casing), I decided to go all the way.

I've now named this certain project "Red, White, and Blackie", coming from the fact that this old Core 2 Duo, will be coming from a black(and definitely generic) Orion case. Also, since most filipinos in the province often name their dogs "Blackie"(regardless if its even the dog's actual color), eh tangina... I'll use this name as well. Besides, I went for a Black, Red, and White motif.

[Gawd... I usually mention "makeover" and "motif" like I'm from Queer Eye for the Straight ****]

Ok, thanks to Violet, my funding is running a bit low, so this particular mod aint really gonna be a "mod"... it's a scratch build. And its not that I hate trees, but I went for one of the cheapest materials around... PAPER PRODUCTS.

No, it wont be made of paper, just somewhat like it. I'm constructing this with 5% Bainbridge Cold Press Illustration boards, 5% BestBuy illustration boards, 5% transparent acrylic panels, 10 percent aluminum, and 75% FOAM BOARDS. Probably unwise right? But then, I plan to let everyone know that it's worth the time. And funny, TIME isnt a luxury that I have. I really want to finish this build in time for Violet's unveiling for my Finals project in school. So wish me luck, or a miracle.

This is my current control center. Yes, I know... it aint much, and it's real messy, but that will soon change. That red, green, and yellow thing that's glowing on top of the monitor is an amplifier, making it possible to use.......

.... the Sony speakers that used to be hooked up to my Dad's stereo component. He gave us the component, but nobody here uses it. So I decided to use the speakers on my pc instead. Now I've got myself a 5.1 setup. hehehe. That's Blackie right next to the sub.

Violet Reaction

Current specs:
-Intel Q8400 Core2Quad 2.66ghz
-MSI Overclocking motherboard(overclocking only when I need to render 3d programs)
-4gb Kingston 800 rams
-4gb G.Skill 800 rams
-160gb Seagate HDD
-500gb Seagate HDD
-1tb Western Digital Caviar HDD
-Inno3d GeForce GTX 260 Core Core216
-HEC 700watts psu

Bought this used casing for only Php150. Didnt go for a branded case since I'm no pro. And since I'll be buying a computer in the next few days or so, I just thought I'd mod this case and use it.

I'll make sure that after I'm done with this case, the only part that you'll recognize would be the interior. Please dont expect much though, this will be my FIRST mod.

Hopefully this would be enough to get me accepted in the modding circle known as "UMP". (AcId_EyEz, puede pa rin palang "Universal Motion Prancers" eh:D joke.).

Please expect a loooooooooooooong wait. Baka yung sunod na post ko dito, after a month pa. Hirap ng student eh.

And yes, pinalitan ko bed sheet ko after ng pictorial na yan.
